Quail

In Georgia, bobwhite quail are present from the mountains to the coast and occupy a special place in the State's wildlife heritage, having been designated as the State Game bird in 1970. Georgia was once considered the bobwhite quail capital of the world. However, the state's quail population has declined by more than 70 percent since the early 1960s. Quail are relatively small ground-dwelling gallinaceous (chicken-like) birds that live in woody thickets that are thick above but open underneath. Adult quail stand 6-7 inches in height and typically weigh about 6 ounces. The male can be most easily identified by a prominent white stripe above the eye, whereas the female (hens) have a cream or buff colored head stripes.

Ms. Rena Divine, a celebrated Albany artist, has graciously donated this artwork. To know the artwork of Rena Divine is to taste the flavor of the Deep South. Primarily a wildlife watercolorist, Mrs. Divine received her formal training at the renowned Ringling School of Art. She has produced some of the most stunning examples of quail, dove, and ducks in the southeast. A significant portion of her work has been donated to the State of Georgia and various charities.
