In 1886 at a cost of $5000, Albany Academy was built on the corner of Flint and Madison Streets. Two years later the Academy was destroyed by fire and was rebuilt on the same site. Due to a rapidly-growing enrollment, the building quickly became too small to handle the growing student population and a one-story annex was built. The building remained overcrowded and in 1908 Albany High School was opened on the corner of Monroe and Society Streets.
In 1919, the old Albany Academy was rebuilt and became Flint Street Grammar School. Because of continued overcrowding, a separate building was built to house the boys in 1924. In 1925 a new high school opened on 1000 Jefferson Street and the old high school became McIntosh Elementary School. That building served the community well until it too could not meet the needs due to growth.
The last Albany High School building was completed in 1954, located at 801 Residence Avenue. An addition of a field house in 2003 and Building 5011 in 2010 complete the building as it sits today. In June of 2017, the Dougherty County School Board approved to close Albany High School due to declining enrollment across the district, underutilization of system facilities and increased financial challenges.
The building is being repurposed to house administrative functions currently located elsewhere in DCSS.
