2007 marks the Sesquicentennial of Mitchell County and the City of Camilla.
On November 17, 1857, С.Н. Натmond, State Senator from Baker County, introduced into the Senate a bill for the purpose of creating a new Georgia county from the portion of Baker County on the east side of the Flint River.
At the suggestion of D.W. Lewis, Representative from Hancock County, the name Mitchell was given to the new county honoring American Revolutionary War General Henry Mitchell from Hancock County.
David West owned the tract of land selected for the county seat of the newly formed Mitchell County, and donated fifty acres on which to erect public buildings and a Court House.
Also at the suggestion of Representative Lewis, this site was named in honor of Miss Camilla Mitchell, the nineteen year old grand-daughter of General Henry Mitchell.
